ilam shed - sketch design

Part of a conceptual proposal undertaken in 2011 for the University of Canterbury
to revitalise a series of relocatable buildings into a temporary post-quake campus.

Lloyd Hartley’s brief was to create a student-friendly café within this campus that
doubles as a function space. By extrapolating the shed form of the original building
an outdoor courtyard was formed beneath a whimsical and ethereal canopy.

christchurch | memorial + resilience + colour

Not far from the site of the CCTV building devastation;
a poignant and arresting installation of '185 chairs' rest.

The work, by Pete Majendie, pays silent homage to those who lost their lives in the earthquake of February 2011.

This is the installation's second place of repose and is well sited to take in the construction of the Cardboard Cathedral.

The principal driver behind this work is the indomitable Shigeru Ban and I for one, am pleased there is such a display of Christchurch's resilience being carried out.

I look forward to a moment of reflection within what I'm sure will be an exquisite condition of light.

Not far away, in the thick of the concrete jungle, Ash Keating is bringing some serious colour into play with his work concrete propositions.

unfinished stairs...

'A stair not worn hollow by footsteps is,
regarded from its own point of view,
only a boring something made of wood.'
Franz Kafka

Soon to bear witness to a thousand hellos and goodbyes, this almost-complete insertion to an existing Waiheke beach house transforms a previously innocuous entrance into an exhibition space, a promenade and a stage for holiday theatre.

skyline

This semester, I'm assisting Judy Cockeram with her design 5 paper:

title:
SKYLINE

program:
BOUTIQUE CASINO

I just love Jack's line in Croupier - 'Hang on tightly, let go lightly.'

Sounds a little like drawing to me.

We've noticed that there doesn't appear to be a lot of really beautiful BIM extrapolated vector drawings out there. Not renders, but line weights so pretty that you'd want to hang them on your wall.

Can it be done?  BIM to lovely line drawings? I gave it a quick bash... Here's a selection of maquettes from my investigations into the the paper's title image.

Possibly a little too influenced by James Bond, no?

Maybe these aren't the most fantastic digital sketches but I'm happy to say it can be done and that it needs further work.  I'm sure Piranesi took a moment to work up his etchings.

So that's some of what we're going to be interested in this semester.  Beautiful drawings extracted directly from BIM models.  Wouldn't be nice to get something that illustrates Paul Klee's take on a drawing?

'A drawing is simply a line going for a walk.' - Paul Klee

Oh, and we quite like mobiles too...

card craft

We're excited, very excited.

We have business cards.

Here's how they came to be...

crafting the design:
Ben Ashley from benzine is the creative force behind our brand identity.
Working with the idiosyncrasies of our shared values + handwriting gently led us to here:

crafting the card:
Ben Ashley - 'Hi guys, how porno would you like to go on your cards?'
Result?
GOLD FOIL - courtesy of Bobby from DCB Pacific Foiling

crafting the card:
Letterpress - Shona from Magpie Press
Within a converted single garage studio and amongst at least 3 tonnes of decades old heavy machinery a beautifully intricate and tactile process took place impressing our cards (and us) with a physical imprint of our identity.

Many thanks to all those involved for their outstanding work and for indulging our obsessions  throughout the process.

headlands - sculpture on the gulf

Auckland anniversary weekend - sculpture on the gulf time!

Super long weekend on Waiheke Island, where the family and I took a wander along the 'headland sculpture on the gulf' walk.  A beautiful day with stunning and exceptional works made for a great outing.  The well earned ginger beers, 'real' beers and a glasses of obsidian vino at the pavilion were a bonus.

Family favorites included...

It was especially interesting to see the works in place as we had assisted Nansi Thompson, artistic director for the 2013 exhibition, in drawing the site plan required for Resource Consent and other assorted meetings where a drawing was required to provide focus!

Get out there and take a look.

if I were a rich man...

This year's AAA Cavalier Bremworth Unbuilt Architecture Awards entry - 'If I were a rich man...'

The urban environment has seen an escalating exodus from commercial buildings. Window space is populated by for lease signs, tills no longer chime and foot-traffic is losing its density. Friedlander’s Ironbank, built during the start of the Global Financial Crisis, has faced an economic climate that has not been sympathetic to its occupancy and consequently its engagement with K-Road as a whole. Its public/private courtyard is hardly occupied and thoroughfare underutilized.

You must spend money to make money *

Through the song If I were a Rich Man from Fiddler on the Roof we propose an intervention in this dead space by channelling the life of K-Road through, up, down and around a reworked public arena, a promenade of flamboyant spiraling parade to reinvigorate and revitalise.

*Titus Maccius Plautus 254-184BC

If I were a rich man
I’d create a partition in the road and throw a parade
All day long we’d biddy biddy bum
If I were a wealthy man
You would only have but fun
I’d open my bubba bubba deedle deedle dum doors
And together we’d spend more and more.

I’d fill corporate boxes, square footage by the dozen
Looking over the middle of town
A fine tin roof with real wooden floors below
There would be one long staircase just going up,
And one even longer coming down,
And one more leading nowhere, just for show.

I’d fill my court with ducks and peacocks and queens and bears
A celebration the town will see and hear
And each loud ‘cheep’ and ‘squawk’ and “holler” and rustle of back combed hair
Would cascade down like glitter
As if to say “Here lives a wealthy man”

I see my wife, my Margret, looking like a rich man’s wife
Gleaming, head to toe, bedazzled
Supervising deals to her heart’s delight
I see her putting on airs and strutting like a peacock
Oi, what a happy mood she’s in
Announcing the performers, sashaying day and night

If I were a rich man
I’d create a partition in the road and throw a parade
All day long we’d biddy biddy bum
If I were a wealthy man
You would only have but fun
I’d open my bubba bubba deedle deedle dum doors
And together we’d spend more and more.

With thanks to the very talented Micheal McCabe and Sam Aislabie - employ them!
